Characters

What is it like to be a 10-year-old Chinese-American boy struggling to find his place in the world? Po, the protagonist of A Boy Called Po, confronts that question throughout the film. He feels like an outsider in all aspects of his life, whether it is at school with his peers or at home with his traditional Chinese family. He yearns to be accepted and to find a place where he can fit in, but it is a challenging, and sometimes painful, journey. Po must overcome his own insecurities and the cultural differences that separate him from the people around him in order to find his true identity.

Master Wu: An elderly martial arts master who teaches Po the power of self-acceptance and inner strength.

Master Wu is a wise and powerful martial arts master and mentor to Po, the protagonist of A Boy Called Po. Throughout the movie, Master Wu teaches Po the importance of self-acceptance and inner strength.

But what is it that makes Master Wu so wise?

What is it that convinces Po to listen to his advice?

It is the deep understanding that Master Wu has of the human condition, and of the power of inner resilience. He knows that in order to accept oneself and find inner strength, one must first understand the struggles that come with the human experience.

Po’s Parents: Hardworking, ambitious parents who are too busy with their careers to give Po the attention he needs.

Po’s parents are hardworking and ambitious, always putting their careers first and leaving Po feeling neglected. But, why are they so busy? Is it because they want to give Po the best life possible and think that a successful career is the only way to do it? Or, is it because they feel the need to prove something to themselves or to their peers? Whatever the reason, its clear that Po’s parents are too preoccupied with their own lives to give him the attention he needs.

Bullies: A group of kids who pick on Po for being different.

Bullying is a major issue in A Boy Called Po (2017), and the movie does an excellent job of tackling it. Its especially apparent in the group of kids that pick on Po for being different: theyre relentless in their teasing and mocking of him.

Why do they do it?

Is it because they fear what they dont understand? Or is it because theyre trying to fit in?

Regardless, the movie shows us that bullying is a serious issue that can have a lasting impact. Its an important reminder that the world needs more compassion, understanding, and acceptance.
