Billy Thompson, played by Harrison Gilbertson, is the protagonist of Accidents Happen (2009). Hes a troubled teenager trying to cope with the death of his father, as well as his own inner demons. But what does it mean to be a troubled teenager?

Is it the confusion of trying to fit in with his peers, or the fear of being left behind? Maybe its the feeling of being alone and not knowing who to turn to. Whatever it is, its clear that Billy is struggling.

Hes not only dealing with the pain of his loss, but also trying to figure out who he is and where he fits. Through his journey in the film, he learns to accept himself and take control of his life.

Jean Thompson (Geena Davis): Billy’s mother, Jean is struggling to keep her family together in the wake of her husband’s death.

How do you keep going when the person youve relied on for so long is suddenly gone? she wonders.

Jean is strong, but dealing with the loss of her husband is no easy task. She must find a way to provide for her children, emotionally and financially.

At times she is overwhelmed, but ultimately Jean Thompson is determined to make sure her family is taken care of.

Lou (Angela Bettis): A troubled teen who becomes Billy’s mentor in the juvenile facility.

Lou, played by Angela Bettis, is a troubled teen in the juvenile facility. She quickly becomes Billy’s mentor, and a crucial source of support for him.

Lou is a complex character who is both emotionally damaged and emotionally supportive. Shes experienced her fair share of pain, but is still able to provide Billy with the guidance he needs.

With her wise words and unwavering support, Lou is able to help Billy come to terms with his grief and find the strength to move forward. As a result, her presence in the film helps provide an important message of hope and redemption.

Tom (Joel Tobeck): Billy’s older brother, who is dealing with his own personal demons.

Tom, Billys older brother, is dealing with his own personal demons. He is so focused on keeping his family together and providing for them that he often overlooks his own struggles. What about me? he questions. How do I make it through this?

Tom is an alcoholic, unable to control his drinking and the resulting consequences. His wife has left him, and his children are struggling to cope with his drinking. He is a broken man, too proud to ask for help. He is trying to be there for Billy and the rest of his family, but the weight of his own problems is too heavy to bear.
