Plot

Have you ever been in a car accident? Anna, the protagonist of After.Life (2009), certainly has. Its an event that changes her life irreversibly.

But whats more shocking than the accident itself?

Anna is left with no memory of it.

In fact, the only thing she remembers is a mysterious figure who appears to her in the aftermath.

When she wakes up, she finds herself in a funeral home, where the figure explains to her that she has passed away and he is now her guide.

The story of After.Life is one that explores the boundary between life and death, and Annas car accident is the catalyst for this exploration.

She is taken to a funeral parlor and is declared dead

But then, a mysterious figure named Anna takes her to a funeral parlor and declares her dead. How can this be? I find myself asking. Is she really dead? Or is something else going on? Is there something more sinister happening at the funeral parlor? Is this a living nightmare or a waking dream? Whatever the answer may be, we can only wait and see what Anna has in store as she guides Christina through this strange and eerie journey.

Eliot Deacon, the funeral director, tells her that she is in a state of limbo between life and death

Eliot Deacon, the funeral director, told her she was in a state of limbo between life and death.

Your body is alive, but your soul is somewhere else, he said.

She shook her head in confusion.

What do you mean? she asked.

I mean, he said, that you are neither dead nor alive. You are in a state of limbo between the two.

She felt a chill run down her spine.

How do I get out of this limbo? she asked.

He smiled sadly.

That is something only you can decide, he said. It all depends on what you want.

Eliot offers to help Anna transition to the afterlife

Eliots offer to help Anna transition to the afterlife has been a source of much debate since the movies release. Is he really a funeral director helping her to go to the other side as he claims? Or does he have some ulterior motive? He insists that hes trying to help her, but Anna remains skeptical.

What do you mean by helping me transition? she asks.

I mean Im here to help you move on, Eliot replies. I can show you the way, make sure you get where you need to go.

What is Eliots true purpose? Is he really trying to help Anna, or is he working to prevent her from crossing over? We may never know the answer, but one thing is certain: Eliots offer to help her transition to the afterlife has left many viewers with more questions than answers.

He tells her she must accept her death and move on

You must accept your death and move on, he said. But how could she? How could she accept the fact that she was dead? Its time, he continued. You have to let go of everything you knew and embrace the afterlife.

He could see the fear in her eyes; fear of the unknown. But he knew that if she wanted to move on, she had to let go of her fear. I know its hard, he said, but its the only way to find peace.

He reached out and took her hand. Its time to accept death and move on, he said gently.

She nodded silently, understanding what he meant.

He smiled and squeezed her hand. Its time to let go, he said.

He begins to prepare her body for her funeral

But what is worse than death? What if death is not the end, but just the beginning? That is the central question of After.Life (2009), in which a woman wakes up in a funeral parlor after being declared dead. She discovers that the funeral director, played by Liam Neeson, is preparing her body for her funeral—and no matter how hard she pleads and begs, he wont be swayed. He believes that she is in the in-between—not quite alive, not quite dead—and that it is his duty to prepare her for her final resting place. It is a haunting and terrifying concept, and it drives the films narrative forward as the woman struggles to find a way out of her own funeral procession.

Anna refuses to accept her death and fights to stay alive

Anna refuses to accept her death and fights to stay alive. But how can she do that, when everyone around her believes shes already dead? Even her own family have accepted her fate, and yet Anna still refuses to give up. She is determined to find a way out of her living nightmare, no matter the cost. But is it possible to fight death? Can she really beat the inevitable?

She begins to suspect that Eliot is not who he seems

She begins to suspect that Eliot is not who he seems, Anna thought to herself. After all, why was he so intent on convincing her that she was dead? Why did he have such a strange interest in her funeral arrangements?

One thing was certain: Anna had to find out the truth. What was Eliots real identity? What was his agenda? Anna was determined to get to the bottom of it, no matter the cost.

She discovers that Eliot is a spiritualist who believes he can help people transition to the afterlife

But what is Eliot really up to? She soon discovers his true purpose: he is a spiritualist who believes he can help people transition to the afterlife.

But how does he do this? She wonders.

Is it real? Can he really help people to move on from this world?

She isnt sure, but Eliot is adamant that he can, and thats what hes been doing for years.

He claims to be able to communicate with the dead and help them to cross over.

But does he have the power to do this? How can she believe him?

Shes not sure, but Eliot is determined to prove that his abilities are real, and that he can help people move on to the afterlife.

Anna eventually discovers that Eliot has been deceiving her
