Plot Summary
Ryota is struggling to make ends meet as a writer. He can barely afford to keep up with his rent and has been unable to finish his novel.
But why is he struggling? Is it the lack of inspiration? Or maybe the inability to find the time?
Maybe its a combination of both. With no steady income, Ryota finds himself in a state of uncertainty and anxiety, unable to focus and unable to put his thoughts into words.
Its a difficult situation, and one that Ryota finds himself in throughout After the Storm. The film follows Ryota as he deals with his financial struggles and attempts to find a way to complete his novel and make a living out of it.
He has a strained relationship with his son and ex-wife and is trying to reconcile with them
Hes trying to reconcile with his son and ex-wife, but its not easy.
What is causing the strain?
In After the Storm, we see the main character, Ryota, struggling to mend his relationship with his son and ex-wife. Hes an unsuccessful writer and private detective whose gambling addiction has cost him his family and, as a result, hes trying to get them back.
However, his attempts to reconcile with them are met with resistance. His son has grown distant, and his ex-wife is still hurt from the past.
Ryota is trying his best to make amends, but its a difficult process. Hes determined to repair the relationships, but he knows it wont be easy.
Ryotas gambling addiction is straining his relationship with his family
Gambling addiction has a terrible way of wreaking havoc on relationships, and After the Storm (2019) is a perfect example of this. Ryotas destructive habit is straining his relationship with his family, particularly with his son. His ex-wife and son are understandably frustrated by his lack of responsibility, and this constant conflict is heartbreaking to watch. How can a father and son bond, when the father is unable or unwilling to put his family before his addiction? Its a difficult question to answer, but its one that After the Storm (2019) attempts to explore.
Ryotas ex-wife Kyoko is trying to move on with her life and has found a new partner
But what of Kyoko? Ryotas ex-wife is trying to move on with her life, and has found a new partner. Is she happier now that shes with someone else? Has the storm truly passed for her?
The movie certainly seems to suggest that Kyoko is in a better place. We see her smiling and content with her new partner, and its clear that shes grown in leaps and bounds since her relationship with Ryota.
Its a testament to her strength that she was able to find happiness again, and its a reminder to us all that, no matter how difficult life may seem, its never too late to start anew.
Ryota and Kyoko attempt to repair their relationship and rebuild the trust between them
Ryota and Kyokos relationship is at the core of the film. They have been estranged for some time and attempt to heal the wounds of their past. But can they rebuild the trust between them?
Its a question that Ryota and Kyoko must grapple with throughout the movie. Can they overcome the distance and hurt of the past? Can they regain the trust that was once so strong between them?
The answers may not be easy to find, but the film shows us that it is possible to mend broken relationships. By opening up to each other and being honest, Ryota and Kyoko can slowly begin to rebuild the trust between them.
Ryota and his son Shingo gradually reconnect and rebuild their relationship
When Ryota and his son Shingo first reconnect, its clear that their relationship has been damaged by years of distance and miscommunication. But as they gradually spend more time together, they begin to rebuild their relationship. Ryota discovers that Shingo is a talented artist and takes him to art exhibitions, while Shingo finds out that Ryota is a passionate detective writer and begins to take a genuine interest in his work. In the end, Ryota and Shingo reconcile and come to understand one another better. Its a touching reminder that with effort and understanding, relationships can be mended, no matter how broken they may seem.
