Plot Summary

Gilderoy is hired to work on an Italian horror film at the Berberian Sound Studio in Italy. But why did they choose him? What made him special? Surely his experience with British nature documentaries wasnt enough to land him a job in the middle of Italy, in the middle of a horror movie? Was it his talent that drew the producers to him? Or was it something else? Whatever the reason, its clear that Gilderoy is the perfect choice for the job: to carry out the sound work on the Italian horror film at the Berberian Sound Studio.

He is greeted by Francesco, the studio manager, and tasked with creating the sound effects

So how did I end up here? he thought to himself as he stepped into the Berberian Sound Studio. Little did he know that he was about to embark on an incredible journey.

Welcome to Berberian, said Francesco, the studio manager, greeting him with a warm smile. Were glad you could join us. Your task, should you choose to accept it, is to create the sound effects for our upcoming film.

This was a daunting task - but one he was determined to face head on. He nodded in agreement, and Francesco showed him around the studio. He was ready to make some magic.

Gilderoy is immediately overwhelmed by the strange and chaotic atmosphere of the studio

Gilderoy arrived at the Berberian Sound Studio expecting a professional and efficient working environment - but instead he was immediately overwhelmed by the strange and chaotic atmosphere of the studio.

Questions raced through his mind - what kind of films were being made here? Were the staff always so disorganised? Was the atmosphere always so unsettling?

Gilderoy had no way of knowing the answers, but he was determined to find out. He had no idea what he was in for - but he was sure of one thing, the Berberian Sound Studio was going to be an interesting place to work.

Gilderoy is horrified by the violent and gory scenes of the horror film he is working on

Gilderoy is horrified by the violent and gory scenes of the horror film he is working on. How could he have known that he would be exposed to such a brutal level of violence?, he wondered. He had expected to be mixing sound for a nature documentary, not the brutal horror film he finds himself in the middle of, he thought. The images of violence and bloodshed are simply too much for him to bear, he sighed. He can only hope that his work on the film will be done soon, so that he can return to his life as a sound engineer, far from this world of horror.

His attempts to keep his sanity are further complicated by the studio personnel’s strange behavior

Are they trying to drive me mad? Peter Stricklands protagonist, Gilderoy, wonders aloud as he navigates the increasingly strange behaviors of the studio personnel in the surreal horror film Berberian Sound Studio. From the off-kilter conversations to the enigmatic studio manager, Gilderoy’s attempts to keep his sanity are further complicated by the personnel’s strange behavior.

He soon learns to expect the unexpected - when he’s asked to create a sound effect for a witch’s scream, he finds himself in the studios garden, crushing watermelons with a hammer. Despite his best efforts, Gilderoy soon realizes that the only way to make sense of the peculiar behavior is to give in to it.

Gilderoy’s mental state is further tested when he receives a mysterious letter from England

Gilderoys mental state is further tested when he receives a mysterious letter from England. But what could it be? What secrets does it contain? As he reads the letter, Gilderoys already fragile state of mind starts to unravel. Hes overwhelmed with a range of emotions - confusion, fear, bewilderment - and starts to question his own sanity.

But what is his fate? What will the letter reveal?

We can only wait and see what will happen next, as Gilderoys mental state is further tested by this strange letter from England.

Gilderoy begins to lose his grip on reality as he struggles to complete the film

Gilderoys journey into the bizarre world of the Berberian Sound Studio is a descent into madness. As he struggles to complete the film, he increasingly finds himself unable to separate reality from the horror movie he is helping to create. He begins to question his own sanity as his mind is overwhelmed by the strange and surreal images that surround him.

But is this really madness? Or is Gilderoy simply struggling to cope with the dark secrets of the studio? Either way, its clear that Gilderoy is losing his grip on reality as the film progresses.

He is increasingly haunted by memories of his past, as well as by the strange events in the studio

He is increasingly haunted by memories of his past, as well as by the strange events in the studio–but what exactly is it thats haunting him? In Berberian Sound Studio (2012), Gilderoy, a British sound engineer, is thrust into a world of surreal horror as he works in an Italian film studio. He begins to question his own sanity, as he struggles to make sense of the bizarre events that unfold around him.

Gilderoy eventually reaches a breaking point and is hospitalized

But how far can Gilderoy go before he reaches his breaking point? Quite far, it seems. We see him gradually become more and more absorbed and consumed by the strange world of Berberian Sound Studio, and his mental health takes a dramatic nosedive. He eventually reaches a point where he can no longer take it, and is hospitalized.

But what pushed him over the edge? The answer is simple: the studio itself. Where others find safety, Gilderoy finds a strange, isolated, and almost alien environment that he can no longer escape from.

Themes
